How to Become a Certified Mercedes Mechanic

Posted on 20th October 2021

Your Mercedes is at the top of the range when it comes to luxury cars. As such it needs the right kind of support to keep it in good shape. Some might think there is a training program suitable for all mechanics. Yet, it takes a lot more to qualify as a certified Mercedes mechanic. The company has a few programs available made to specifically train Mercedes mechanics. Each one needs knowledge, commitment and zeal to complete. So, here are the ways that mechanics and technicians can train to work with Mercedes cars.

The Mercedes Benz Automotive Systems Technical Program

The main path to becoming a qualified Mercedes mechanic is through the Mercedes Benz Automotive Systems Technical Program (MBASTP). Mercedes created this program in 2012 in partnership with the University of West Alabama and Shelton State Community College. The company designed the course to give trainees the knowledge and skills needed to repair and service Mercedes cars. Also, it teaches them how to work in vehicle assembly for Mercedes cars. The program entails six full terms of study along with paid work experience each week inside the Mercedes plant. Once complete, the student will have the option to work directly with Mercedes Benz.

The ELITE START Program

The second path to becoming a qualified Mercedes mechanic is through the ELITE START program. This program runs in partnership with the Universal Technical Institute (UTI). Mercedes designed the course to help students become qualified technicians when it comes to working with their cars. In order to become certified, students need to complete a 12 week training course in repairs and maintenance procedures. In addition, students must complete six months working for a Mercedes car dealership. The core subjects in the course are:

  • An Introduction to Mercedes Benz.
  • Chassis Electronics.
  • Driving Dynamics & Comfort Control Systems.
  • Engine Management & Pre Delivery Inspection.

The Mercedes Benz DRIVE Program

The final path to becoming a qualified Mercedes mechanic is through the Mercedes Benz DRIVE Program. This program also runs in partnership with the Universal Technical Institute. It is designed for those already working for a Mercedes car dealership who want to add to their skills and knowledge in repairs. This program is paid for through the manufacturer. As such it is a very selective program open only to those with proven skills and credentials. The subjects taught in this hands on course are:

  • An Introduction to Mercedes Benz.
  • Basic Diagnostic Strategies.
  • Brakes & Traction.
  • Career Development.
  • Climate Control.
  • Disassembly.
  • Electrical.
  • Engine Management Systems.
  • Service & Maintenance.
  • Suspension & Telematics.

Once the course is complete and they have completed at least six months of car dealership work the student will receive a Systems Technician title.
